Dr. Bettie McKaig established her practice as a general and cosmetic dentist in Raleigh, North Carolina upon receiving her degree as a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978. While still in the dental program, Dr. McKaig, following her inclination to serve the community, entered the Masters Program in Public Health at Chapel Hill. Dr. McKaig is the only dentist in North Carolina to have been President of all three state-wide dental organizations, the North Carolina Academy of General Dentistry, the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners, and the North Carolina Dental Society. At the national level, Dr, McKaig was the 1st Vice-President of the American Dental Association.
